Streng Bros. Neighborhoods

Bill and Jim Streng built roughly 3,800 homes across the Sacramento region from 1959 onward, in about 40 subdivisions spread through Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties. Most were designed by architect Carter Sparks. The tracts below are where you will find them.

A Streng neighborhood is usually easy to recognize from the street: low rooflines, exposed post-and-beam framing, walls of glass facing a private rear garden rather than the road, and mature trees planted when the tracts went in sixty years ago. Many subdivisions mixed single detached houses with more affordable half-plex models. Some, such as Evergreen Commons and River City Commons, have their own neighborhood associations, and River College Square is known for the valley oaks the Strengs built around rather than cleared.

And the Eichlers. Sacramento has one Eichler tract, South Land Park Hills: about 60 homes designed by architects Jones and Emmons and built in 1955 and 1956. The Sacramento City Council approved it as the South Land Park Hills (Eichler) Historic District in May 2024, the first Eichler tract in Northern California to gain local historic status. It is not a Streng neighborhood, but I handle Eichler and custom mid-century modern homes across the region as well, so please ask if that is what you are after.
